Most visitors only know Klungkung as the regency that Nusa Penida belongs to. In early October it has two good reasons to look closer: the Nusa Penida Festival on the island, and the Klungkung Heritage Festival on 10–11 October in Semarapura, the mainland town that was once the seat of Bali’s most senior royal house.
Nusa Penida Festival
The festival is built around culture and conservation: parades, dance and music, traditional rituals and outdoor sports, with mangrove planting, coral restoration and a baby turtle release. Local makers sell food and coastal crafts, and entry is free.
Confirm the dates first. Indonesia’s national tourism site lists 8–10 October; Bali’s January event calendar had 5–7 October. Check the festival’s own channels before you buy boat tickets.
Getting across
Fast boats run from Sanur, Padangbai and Kusamba, and the crossing takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Sanur has the most departures if you are staying in the south. Padangbai and Kusamba are closer if you plan to combine the island with Semarapura and the east. Morning crossings are usually calmer; keep valuables in a dry bag and expect to wade the last few metres onto the beach at some harbours.
Make a day of the island
Festival days are busy around the venue, so split your time. The west coast viewpoints are the classics: Kelingking Beach from the top (the path down is steep and only for the sure-footed), then Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong, which sit next to each other. Swim later in the day at Crystal Bay. Roads on Nusa Penida are narrow and rough in places; a driver is easier than a scooter if you have not ridden on the island before.
Back on the mainland: Semarapura, 10–11 October
Event listings for the Klungkung Heritage Festival mention heritage walks through the old town, dance and music at Kertha Gosa and a food fair. Kertha Gosa, the former royal court of justice, has painted ceilings in the Kamasan or wayang style, telling stories from the Hindu epics. 10 October is also Tumpek Wayang, the day Bali blesses its puppets and performing arts (read our guide).
If you crossed via Padangbai, stay east for an extra night: Blue Lagoon Padangbai is a good snorkelling stop by the harbour, and Candidasa Beach is a quiet base with an easy pace.
Heat, cash and ceremonies
- Early October is hot and bright. Plan walks for the morning and late afternoon; our weather page shows the UV index by the hour.
- Bring cash for small stalls, parking and village entry fees, especially on Nusa Penida.
- Festivals here are community events with ritual at their heart. Wear a sarong and sash if you enter a temple, and ask before photographing people taking part in ceremonies.
