At the turn of the month, Bali celebrates a run of five linked holy days that close the 210-day pawukon calendar and open the next. They are about knowledge: receiving it, cleansing the mind with it, and using it to stay strong. Here is what happens each day in 2026, and what it means if you are visiting.

Saturday 31 October: Saraswati

The day of Dewi Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, learning and the arts. Books, palm-leaf manuscripts and school buildings receive offerings, and students and teachers pray at their school temples in the morning, in temple dress. In Ubud, Saraswati Temple, with its lotus ponds, is dedicated to the goddess and draws worshippers on the day.

Sunday 1 November: Banyu Pinaruh

The day after Saraswati, families go to the sea, rivers, lakes or springs to cleanse themselves. The name is usually explained as “the water of knowledge”. Many people gather on the beach before sunrise, from around 05:30, to bathe and pray as the sun comes up.

Expect busy beaches at dawn in places such as Sanur’s Pantai Karang and Mahagiri Beach, or Kuta Beach, and more people at water temples like Tirta Empul. If you were planning a sunrise swim or a temple visit, go a little later in the morning.

2 and 3 November: Soma Ribek and Sabuh Mas

Two quieter days follow. Soma Ribek gives thanks for fertile land and the harvest; Sabuh Mas is for wealth and livelihood. You will notice offerings more than ceremonies.

Wednesday 4 November: Pagerwesi

Pagerwesi, “the iron fence”, is about fortifying yourself with knowledge. Across most of Bali it is a temple and family day. In the north it is much bigger: in Buleleng, Pagerwesi is celebrated as festively as Galungan. If you are staying around Lovina Beach, expect families visiting temples and relatives, and a holiday mood in town.

How to be a good guest

  • At the beach on Banyu Pinaruh, give families space at the water’s edge and don’t photograph people bathing.
  • Wear a sarong and sash if you enter a temple, and never step over offerings on the ground.
  • Shops and warung may open late or close early on Saraswati and Pagerwesi. Have a plan B for meals in small towns.
