Pura Taman Saraswati, commonly known as the Ubud Water Palace, is an exquisite 16th-century Balinese Hindu temple situated along Jalan Raya Ubud in the town center. Designed by master Balinese architect and sculptor I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, the temple is dedicated to Dewi Saraswati, the revered goddess of learning, wisdom, literature, and the arts. The temple's defining feature is an expansive ceremonial pond blanketed with flowering pink lotus blossoms, bisected by an ornate stone bridge leading to an elaborately carved candi bentar gateway. In the evenings, the lotus-flanked amphitheater courtyard serves as an atmospheric stage for traditional Balinese legong and barong dance dramas accompanied by live gamelan ensembles.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Morning Lotus Blossom Window. Visit between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM when the pink lotus flowers in the ceremonial ponds are in full morning bloom and before tourist crowds gather on the central stone walkway.

  2. 02

Nightly Cultural Dance Tickets. The temple courtyard hosts authentic Balinese Legong and Barong dance performances almost every night at 7:30 PM; purchase tickets (around Rp 100,000) directly from banjar locals outside the entrance in the late afternoon.

  3. 03

Front-Row Dining at Cafe Lotus. Reserve a front-row open-air table at the adjoining Cafe Lotus for dinner to watch the illuminated lotus pond and evening cultural performances while dining.
