Lovina Beach is a tranquil coastal expanse spanning several villages along Bali's less-commercialized northern shoreline in Buleleng Regency. Characterized by calm, wave-free turquoise waters and unique black volcanic sand, the beach provides a stark and peaceful contrast to the energetic surf hubs of southern Bali. The region is internationally celebrated for its early-morning dolphin tours, where traditional motorized outrigger canoes take travelers out to sea to observe wild spinner and spotted dolphins. With protected coral reefs and spectacular sunset views over the volcanoes of East Java, Lovina remains North Bali's premier seaside retreat.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Ethical Dolphin Watching. Request a private boat with a local captain who agrees to maintain a respectful distance from dolphin pods rather than revving engines to chase them; departing around 7:00 AM often allows you to view dolphins after early crowds disperse.

  2. 02

Offshore Snorkeling. Combine your dolphin tour with reef snorkeling; the calm morning waters near Kalibukbuk offer excellent visibility to view vibrant soft corals and tropical reef fish.

  3. 03

Tranquil Sunset Views. Because Lovina faces north-northwest, sunset over the calm sea with the volcanic peaks of Java on the horizon is one of the most serene and unhurried sunset experiences on the island.
