Plant-Based Ubud: Where to Eat Fully Vegan and Vegetarian

Ubud has more fully plant-based kitchens than anywhere else in Bali. Seven worth the trip, from raw-food cafés to a restaurant in its own permaculture garden.

Finding a vegan option in Bali is easy almost everywhere. Finding a whole kitchen where you can order anything on the menu is easiest in Ubud, where a wellness crowd has supported plant-based restaurants for decades. These are the ones on Pinlora whose entire menu is vegetarian or plant-based, plus one long-running all-rounder.

Fully plant-based

Alchemy in Penestanan opened in 2011 and is built around raw, plant-based food: salads and bowls you assemble yourself, raw desserts and a small apothecary. There is a second Alchemy in Uluwatu if you get hooked.

Sage is in Nyuh Kuning, the quiet village just south of the Monkey Forest. The menu leans towards comfort food with Mexican influences: jackfruit tacos, cauliflower “wings”, generous bowls.

Moksa sits in its own permaculture garden in Banjar Kutuh, in the Sayan area west of Ubud, and cooks with what grows there. It mixes raw and cooked dishes and feels more like a dinner out than a café stop.

Sayuri Healing Food, on Jalan Sukma Kesuma, was founded by raw-food chef Sayuri Tanaka and doubles as a cooking school. Come for the raw cakes; stay for a class if you want to take the ideas home.

Zest is a bamboo-and-stone pavilion on a hill above the Campuhan valley, on Jalan Raya Penestanan, cooking plant-based dishes from Indonesian ingredients.

Fully vegetarian

The Elephant, on Jalan Raya Sanggingan, is entirely vegetarian, a member of the Slow Food movement, and has an open-air deck looking over the Campuhan Ridge and the river valley. It is a good choice for a sunset dinner.

A mixed menu that caters to everyone

Bali Buda has been feeding Ubud since 1994. It is not fully vegetarian, but its menu covers vegan, raw, macrobiotic and gluten-free diets, and each café has a small organic grocery for supplies.

Beyond Ubud

On the coast, Kynd Community in Seminyak and I AM VEGAN BABE and Shady Shack in Canggu are all plant-based or vegetarian. The full list, with a map, is on our vegan and vegetarian guide.

How we wrote this: from Pinlora’s place listings, each matched to its Google Maps listing. Menus change; if you have an allergy, ask the kitchen rather than relying on any list.
