A warung is a small, usually family-run eatery, and for most Balinese it is where everyday meals happen. If you are new to it, the format is simple, but a few terms and habits make ordering easier. This guide explains the main dishes and lists warungs on Pinlora that serve them.
Two dishes to know
Nasi campur means "mixed rice": a mound of rice with small portions of side dishes. Pinlora's listings mention versions with duck, vegetable urab (a dressed vegetable and coconut mix) and other Balinese sides. Sun Sun Warung in Ubud serves nasi campur platters and crispy duck in a family compound, and Warung Soeper on Jalan Danau Buyan in Sanur lists a traditional nasi campur set on its Maps menu.
Babi guling is spit-roasted suckling pig, seasoned with a spice paste. It is pork, so it is not suitable if you avoid pork. Two well-known specialists on Pinlora are Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud and Babi Guling Pak Malen on Sunset Road in Seminyak. Their listings describe a plate of roast meat, crackling, sausage and lawar-style vegetables with rice.
How ordering usually works
- Point and pick. At many warungs the food sits in a glass cabinet. You point to what you want and it is plated with rice.
- Pay at the end. Some places add up the plate; others take your money at a till. Ask before sitting down if you are unsure.
- Prices are usually modest, but not fixed. We do not quote prices here because they change; Pinlora's Maps-based listings show a per-person range for several warungs, for example Rp 25,000–50,000 for Warung Gede in Medewi.
- Cash first. Smaller warungs may not take cards or QRIS, so carry cash.
- Spice. Sambal is often served on the side or mixed in. Ask for it separately if you are sensitive to heat.
Warungs by area
- Ubud: Sun Sun Warung and Ibu Oka, as above.
- Seminyak and Legian: Pak Malen for babi guling, Warung Nia in Kayu Aya Square for Balinese barbecue and rijsttafel, and Sate Babi Bawah Pohon in Legian, a pork satay stall that grew into an open-air food hall.
- Sanur: Warung Mak Beng has served the same set since 1941, according to its listing: fried fish, fish-head soup and rice.
- Kintamani: Warung Baling Baling on Jalan Raya Penelokan highlights mujair nyat nyat and Bali coffee on its Maps menu.
- Medewi: Warung Gede, near the surf point.
Warung or restaurant?
The word is used loosely. Some places that call themselves warungs are full sit-down restaurants. Murni's Warung in Ubud, for example, is described in its listing as the town's first modern dining landmark, founded in 1974, with open-air terraces above the Campuhan River. It is a good choice if you want a comfortable table and a menu in English, while the pointing-at-a-cabinet kind of warung is the more everyday experience. Both are legitimate ways to try Balinese food; choose by how much time and comfort you want.
Timing and hours
Many warungs cook in the morning and close when the day's food is gone, so lunchtime is safer than late afternoon. Babi guling in particular is usually a late-morning and lunch meal. Hours change, so check the listing or ask a local before a long trip.
