A seafood dinner on Jimbaran Bay is a Bali routine: pick fish and shellfish, have it weighed, and eat it at a table in the sand as the sun goes down. It is simple, but the pricing model catches visitors out, so here is how it works.

How it works

At the beach restaurants, you choose seafood from iced counters at the entrance. It is weighed, and you pay by weight plus a cooking charge. Pinlora's listing for Menega Cafe, on Muaya Beach, describes this: live catches such as prawns, snapper, squid and lobster are weighed and grilled to order over coconut husk. Lia Cafe is a family-run neighbour a few steps along the same beach.

The alternative is the fish market at nearby Kedonganan, where you buy by the kilo and carry the catch to a warung to be cooked. Bali Home Immo (September 2025) puts the cooking fee there at about IDR 15,000–30,000 per kg, says payment is mostly cash, and recommends arriving by 4 pm for a sunset meal. Prices change; treat any figure as a guide, not a quote.

What to check before it is cooked

  • Weight and price per kg. Watch the weighing and ask for the total in writing or on a calculator.
  • Cooking charge, rice and sides. Ask whether they are included.
  • Tax and service. Ask whether the price is before or after.
  • Payment. Ask about cards and QRIS at the start, and carry cash.
  • Allergies. Say so before ordering; shellfish and sauces are shared.

Timing

Sunset tables on the sand are the draw. Arrive early enough to choose a table and order before dark. Jimbaran is close to the airport, so many people come on the first or last night; allow extra time for traffic on the way back.

Other places to eat in Jimbaran

  • Sundara at Four Seasons: a beachfront restaurant and lounge at the Four Seasons resort.
  • Balique: a brasserie in a century-old traditional Javanese building on Jalan Raya Uluwatu, a short walk from the beach.
  • Cuca Restaurant: a garden restaurant set in tropical gardens.
  • Rock Bar: a cliff-top sunset bar at AYANA, for drinks before or after dinner.
