Nusa Lembongan Mangrove Forest is a vital, biodiverse coastal wetland ecosystem spanning more than 200 hectares across the northeastern tip of Nusa Lembongan in Klungkung Regency. Sheltered from direct ocean swells, the extensive Rhizophora mangrove estuary serves as a critical coastal nursery for marine life and protects the island from tidal erosion. Traditional local boatmen guide visitors deep into the labyrinth of quiet saltwater canals aboard traditional unmotorized wooden sampans, propelled silently using long bamboo push-poles. Drifting through these emerald tunnels beneath dense canopies, travelers can observe vibrant birdlife, scurrying mudskippers, and tranquil coastal scenery in a serene, engine-free environment.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Silent Push-Pole Boat Journey. Choose a traditional wooden sampan steered by a local villager with a bamboo pole; the absence of motor noise allows you to hear native kingfishers and crabs in the canopy.

  2. 02

High-Tide Paddleboarding. If renting a stand-up paddleboard or clear kayak, schedule your excursion during high tide when deep water fills the narrow interior canals for smooth navigation.

  3. 03

Mangrove Point Snorkeling. After touring the forest, hire a local boatman to take you just beyond the estuary mouth to Mangrove Point, renowned for vibrant coral gardens and drift snorkeling.
