Lake Batur
Busy 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM Found on Google Maps 6 Oct 2026
Lake Batur (Danau Batur) is the largest and most picturesque freshwater lake in Bali, occupying the southeastern crescent of the colossal Kintamani volcanic caldera at the foot of Mount Batur and Mount Abang. Sitting at an altitude of 1,050 meters above sea level, the tranquil, nutrient-rich volcanic crater lake covers an area of roughly 16 square kilometers. Revered by Balinese Hindus as sacred and ruled by Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and rivers, the waterbody is believed to replenish the subterranean aquifers that feed the island's vital subak irrigation networks. The lakeshore is dotted with traditional fishing villages, organic vegetable farms, thermal hot spring resorts in Toya Bungkah, and the enigmatic ancient cemetery of Trunyan on its isolated eastern bank.
Insider tips
-
01
Soak in Lakeside Geothermal Springs. Visit the natural mineral hot springs in Toya Bungkah (such as Batur Natural Hot Spring or Toya Devasya) right on the lake's edge to bathe in 38°C–42°C volcanic thermal waters while gazing across the serene lake surface.
-
02
Boat Trip to Trunyan Village. Hire a traditional motorboat from the Kedisan pier to visit the ancient Bali Aga village of Trunyan on the eastern shore, famous for leaving its deceased exposed to decompose naturally beneath the sacred Taru Menyan tree.
-
03
Taste Lake Mujair Fish. Stop by a rustic lakeside warung along Toya Bungkah to taste freshly caught Mujair Nyat-Nyat—local freshwater tilapia cooked in a rich, aromatic Balinese spice paste.
Good to know
- Access & Boat Charters
- Accessing the lakeside roads is covered by the Kintamani entrance retribution ticket; chartered boat crossings from Kedisan harbor to Trunyan typically cost Rp 350,000 to Rp 500,000 per boat (seating up to 4–6 passengers).
- Hours & Climate
- Lake attractions are accessible daily from dawn until dusk; the lake basin can be breezy and cool in the late afternoon, so having a windbreaker or warm layer is advisable.
