Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is a historic Balinese water temple established around 1634 on the shores of Lake Beratan in the cool, misty Bedugul highlands. Dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and rivers, the temple serves a vital religious role in blessing the agricultural irrigation waters across central Bali. Its multi-tiered meru towers—rising 11 and 3 tiers high—appear to float gracefully upon the water's surface when lake levels are high, set against emerald volcanic slopes. Immortalized on the Indonesian 50,000 Rupiah banknote, the scenic temple complex also houses manicured flower gardens, historical shrines, and traditional boating docks.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Beat the Morning Cloud Cover. Arrive between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM when the lake is completely calm, producing glass-like water reflections before mountain clouds roll across the peaks by 10:00 AM.

  2. 02

Pedal Boat Photo Perspective. Rent a traditional wooden boat or swan pedal boat at the lakeside jetty to capture iconic water-level photographs of the floating meru shrines from the lake.

  3. 03

Mountain Climate Clothing. Located over 1,200 meters above sea level, Bedugul is notably cooler and wetter than coastal Bali; pack a light jacket, sweater, and a compact umbrella.
