The Handara Iconic Gate is an imposing traditional Balinese split gateway (Candi Bentar) located in the cool mountain highlands of Bedugul in northern Bali. Originally built as the grand entrance to the Handara Golf & Resort Bali, the gate has evolved into one of the island's most celebrated photography landmarks. The monumental stone structure features intricate traditional carvings framed by dramatic green volcanic slopes, dense tropical pine forests, and frequent rolling mountain mist. Situated along the main mountain pass near Lake Buyan, it offers travelers a picturesque glimpse of Bali's cool upland landscape and classical architectural grandeur.
Insider tips
-
01
Beat the Photo Queue. Due to viral popularity, photo lines can take 30 to 45 minutes by midday; arrive early between 6:30 AM and 8:00 AM for soft morning light and virtually no wait.
-
02
Staff Assistance for Photos. Resort staff stationed at the gate ticket booth are skilled at capturing photos and will often use mirrors to create viral reflective puddle illusions on your smartphone.
-
03
Prepare for Chilly Weather. Highlands in Bedugul sit at over 1,400 meters altitude and are noticeably cooler than the coast; bring a light jacket or sweater as morning temperatures often dip below 20°C (68°F).
