Tirta Empul Temple
$$ Found on Google Maps 5 Oct 2026
Pura Tirta Empul is a sacred Balinese Hindu water temple founded in 962 AD in the village of Manukaya near Tampaksiring. Dedicated to Vishnu, the temple is centered around a crystal-clear sacred freshwater spring that bubbles up into a large enclosed pool, feeding dozens of carved stone water spouts in two purification pools (petirtaan). For over a thousand years, Balinese devotees and travelers from around the world have journeyed here to participate in the spiritual Melukat water purification ritual, washing away negative energies and physical ailments. Overlooking the temple grounds is the historic Istana Tampaksiring presidential palace built by Indonesia's first president, Sukarno.
