Tegalalang Rice Terrace is an iconic agricultural landscape and UNESCO World Heritage cultural monument situated in the highlands north of Ubud. The breathtaking attraction showcases steep, emerald-green terraced hills sculpted over centuries using subak, Bali's ancient communal cooperative irrigation system. The dramatic valley is dotted with rustic viewing cafes, bamboo walkways, and world-famous giant jungle swings that soar high over the river canyon. Visitors can hike down into the lush ravine and wander along narrow mud berms to observe traditional farmers cultivating and harvesting rice by hand.
Insider tips
-
01
Early Morning Light Rays. Arrive between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM to witness sunrise rays piercing through coconut palms and morning mist before daytime heat arrives.
-
02
Cross the Valley Bridge. Walk across the bottom river footbridge and climb the eastern hillside trails, which offer sweeping panoramas with far fewer tourists than the roadside.
-
03
Small Cash Donations. Local farmers maintain the earthen trails and bamboo bridges; carry small banknotes (Rp 10,000 to Rp 20,000) for trail maintenance donation boxes along the path.
Good to know
- Admission & Swings
- Standard terrace entrance fee is Rp 25,000 per person; giant jungle swings and ziplines charge separate fees (Rp 150,000 to Rp 300,000).
- Footwear Advisory
- Wear sturdy sneakers or sports sandals with dependable traction; the clay steps and earthen paths can become slick and muddy after tropical rain.
