Thomas Beach
Busy 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM Found on Google Maps 1 Oct 2026
Thomas Beach is a tranquil, picture-perfect white sand haven nestled along the western coastline of Pecatu in Uluwatu, tucked between Padang Padang and Suluban Beach. Named after the pioneering Thomas Homestay that first welcomed intrepid surfers to this cliff edge decades ago, the beach is reached via a modest gravel path and a flight of roughly a hundred gentle, shaded stone steps. At the base lies a broad sweep of soft pale sand framed by dramatic limestone boulders, turquoise waters, and rustic timber warungs. Offering all the postcard-worthy beauty of southern Bali without the overwhelming tourist crowds of neighboring beaches, it remains one of the Bukit's premier hidden gems.
Insider tips
-
01
Escape the Padang Padang Crowds. Located just a two-minute drive from the tour-bus congestion of Padang Padang, Thomas Beach offers identical white sand and clear water with a fraction of the visitors.
-
02
Low-Tide Sea Cave Exploration. At low tide, the receding ocean allows visitors to walk around the massive coral rock outcrops on the right end of the beach to explore hidden caves, sheltered alcoves, and calm natural wading pools.
-
03
Shaded Sunbeds & Board Rentals. Modest local warungs rent comfortable cushioned sunbeds with large umbrellas for approximately Rp 50,000 to Rp 100,000 for the entire day, and offer foam surfboards for casual mid-tide reef breaks.
Good to know
- Parking & Admission
- Scooter parking along the clifftop gravel lot costs Rp 5,000; there is no formal admission fee to the beach, although a voluntary donation box is maintained at the head of the stairway.
- Stairway Access & Footwear
- The stair descent is manageable and shaded, but wear sturdy sandals or sneakers as steps can be dusted with slippery loose sand; reef shoes are beneficial for wading near coral.
