Manta Point is a world-renowned pelagic diving and snorkeling sanctuary nestled beneath the towering limestone sea cliffs of southern Nusa Penida. The dive site centers around a prominent underwater pinnacle that functions as a year-round cleaning station for resident giant reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) with wingspans reaching up to five meters. Nutrient-dense ocean upwellings from the deep waters of the Indian Ocean provide an abundant supply of plankton, drawing dozens of these gentle giants to barrel-roll and feed near the surface. The site delivers one of the most reliable and awe-inspiring wildlife encounters in the Indo-Pacific, accessible via chartered day boats from mainland Bali and neighboring islands.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Book Early Morning Departures. Southern ocean swells and winds build significantly after 11:00 AM; book the earliest morning boat departure from Sanur, Nusa Lembongan, or Toya Pakeh to ensure smoother sea crossings and clearer visibility.

  2. 02

Practice Passive Observation. Never attempt to touch, chase, or free-dive directly above the manta rays; float quietly on the surface, and the inquisitive mantas will naturally glide close to inspect you.

  3. 03

Take Seasickness Precautions. The boat ride along Nusa Penida's southern cliffline is notorious for heavy open-ocean swells; take motion-sickness medication 30 minutes before boarding your boat.
