Lake Tamblingan (Danau Tamblingan) is an ethereal, deeply sacred crater lake resting at an elevation of 1,220 meters on the northern slopes of Mount Lesung in the Munduk highlands of Buleleng. The smallest and most pristine of Bali's caldera lakes, Tamblingan derives its name from the ancient words Tamba (spiritual medicine) and Elingan (mindful remembrance), tracing back to a 10th-century civilization. Dense, ancient primary rainforest hugs the lake shore, which is peppered with over thirty sacred stone temples, including the mystical Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan and Pura Gubug. To protect the lake's delicate ecology and spiritual purity, motorized boats are strictly forbidden, allowing only traditional dugout wooden canoes to slice through its mystical morning waters.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Sunrise Dugout Canoe Crossing. Hire a traditional local wooden pedahu (dugout canoe) at 6:00 AM to glide across the mirror-calm water as morning mist lifts, revealing the submerged stone shrines of Pura Gubug.

  2. 02

Ancient Rainforest Trekking. Combine your lake canoe crossing with a guided walking trek through the surrounding ancient jungle, home to towering banyan trees, rare highland orchids, and wild macaques.

  3. 03

Respecting Sacred Sanctuaries. Several lakeside temples flood during the rainy season; maintain solemn etiquette when photographing shrines and avoid climbing on stone temple structures.
