Kehen Temple
Busy 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM Found on Google Maps 3 Oct 2026
Pura Kehen is a majestic, ancient state temple dating back to the 11th century, spectacularly built upon the terraced southern slopes of Bukit Bangli in Bangli Regency. Often revered as a smaller, more intimate counterpart to Besakih, this royal sanctuary served as the state temple of the Bangli Kingdom. Visitors approach via an imposing 38-step stone stairway flanked by expressive carved statues representing characters from the Ramayana, crowned by a grand Candigelar split gate. The main courtyard is dominated by a monumental, multi-century-old Banyan tree (Pohon Beringin) housing a high-perched wooden drum (kulkul) within its sprawling aerial roots, framed by 11-tiered thatched meru shrines. Free from heavy commercial tourist traffic, Pura Kehen exudes an aura of profound antiquity and authentic spiritual serenity.
