Besakih Temple
Busy 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM Found on Google Maps 9 Oct 2026
Besakih Temple (Pura Besakih), reverently known as the "Mother Temple of Bali" (Pura Agung Besakih), is the largest, holiest, and most important Hindu temple complex on the island. Majestically situated over 1,000 meters high upon the southwestern volcanic slopes of sacred Mount Agung in Karangasem, the sanctuary encompasses a sprawling network of at least 86 individual temples and shrines arranged across terraced stone slopes. Dating back over a millennium, the complex is centered around Pura Penataran Agung, dedicated to the Hindu trinity (Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu) with grand stone stairways flanked by mythical stone guardians leading to multi-tiered meru pagodas. Miraculously spared by the lava flows of Mount Agung's massive 1963 eruption, Besakih remains the spiritual heart and epicentre of Balinese Hinduism.
