Pura Besakih, reverently referred to as the "Mother Temple" of Bali, is the largest, holiest, and most spiritually significant Hindu temple complex on the island. Situated nearly 1,000 meters above sea level on the southwestern slopes of the sacred volcano Mount Agung, the sanctuary dates back over a thousand years to prehistoric origins. The complex comprises 23 distinct temples arranged along ascending terraces, with the central sanctuary, Pura Penataran Agung, dominating the vista with its towering multi-tiered meru shrines. Miraculously surviving the catastrophic 1963 eruption of Mount Agung, Besakih remains the spiritual heart of Balinese Hinduism.
