Perched dramatically on a verdant hillside beneath the sacred silhouette of Mount Agung in Manggis, Karangasem, Amankila ("Peaceful Hill") is an iconic luxury beach resort overlooking the azure waters of the Lombok Strait. Opened in 1992 and designed by renowned architect Ed Tuttle, the resort takes direct inspiration from the historic royal water palaces of East Bali, specifically Taman Ujung and Tirta Gangga. Its world-famous architectural centerpiece is a dramatic three-tiered cascading infinity pool that mirrors the stepped topography of traditional Balinese rice terraces, appearing to pour directly into the ocean. The property consists of 34 freestanding stilted suites crowned with alang-alang thatched roofs and connected by elevated wooden walkways lined with frangipani trees. Below the cliff, a secluded private black-sand beach is home to the Amankila Beach Club, featuring an open-air restaurant, water sports pavilion, and a magnificent 41-meter lap pool set beneath a grove of coconut palms. Dining is highlighted by The Restaurant, serving traditional Balinese duck and suckling pig along with freshly caught East Bali seafood, The Terrace, and intimate clifftop dining bales.
