Pura Tanah Lot is Bali's most famous marine sanctuary, perched dramatically atop an offshore rock formation carved by centuries of crashing ocean tides in Tabanan Regency. Founded in the 16th century by the revered Hindu sage Dang Hyang Nirartha, the sea temple is dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea and is protected, according to local legend, by venomous sea snakes residing in the underwater caverns. At high tide, the rock promontory is completely encircled by the ocean, transforming into an offshore island. During sunset, the dramatic silhouette of the multi-tiered meru shrine against vibrant skies creates an iconic postcard panorama.
