Tanah Lot Temple (Pura Tanah Lot) is one of Bali's most iconic and revered sea temples (Pura Segara), dramatically perched upon a rugged offshore volcanic rock formation in Beraban, Tabanan Regency. Built in the 16th century by the venerable Hindu sage Dang Hyang Nirartha, the temple honors the ocean deities and guards the island's southwest coastline against malicious maritime spirits. Surrounded by crashing Indian Ocean waves during high tide, the sanctuary appears to float on the sea, while low tide exposes the rocky seabed, allowing visitors to walk right to the foot of the promontory. Renowned globally for its magical sunset silhouettes against golden skies, Tanah Lot stands as a timeless testament to Balinese spirituality and coastal grandeur.

Insider tips

  1. 01

Low Tide Holy Water Blessing. Time your visit for low tide when you can walk across the wet sand flats to the natural freshwater spring beneath the rock, where local priests provide a traditional Tirta blessing and rice grain bindi (bija) on your forehead.

  2. 02

Sunset Vantage Point. To avoid the dense crowd on the main shoreline plaza, walk along the clifftop coastal path past Pura Batu Bolong to the elevated cliffside cafes for a panoramic view of the sun setting behind the sea temple.

  3. 03

Beware of Wave Surges. Wear footwear with dependable traction and stay alert on the wet, mossy rock platform; sudden ocean swells can easily splash up during incoming tides.
