Bebek Bengil (Dirty Duck)
$$ Busy 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM (Dinner) Found on Google Maps 2 Oct 2026
Bebek Bengil, affectionately known worldwide as the "Dirty Duck Diner", is a legendary culinary institution established in 1990 by Anak Agung Inche Gunawan along Jalan Hanoman in Padangtegal, Ubud. The restaurant earned its whimsical name when a flock of muddy ducks from nearby rice fields waddled across the newly laid floors just prior to opening. Bebek Bengil pioneered Bali's crispy duck culinary phenomenon: half a locally farmed duck is seasoned with native Balinese spices, steamed until fork-tender, and deep-fried to a golden, shatteringly crisp perfection while retaining juicy, flavorful meat. Set across a four-acre garden estate filled with traditional thatched gazebos, tranquil lotus ponds, flowering water lilies, and active rice paddies, it provides an quintessential Balinese dining experience.
Insider tips
-
01
Pre-Order the 24-Hour Bebek Betutu. While the signature crispy fried duck (Bebek Goreng) is cooked fresh to order, their traditional Bebek Betutu (slow-smoked in banana leaves for 24 hours with rich bumbu) requires one day advance reservation.
-
02
Reserve a Back-Garden Bale. Request a secluded traditional thatched gazebo (bale bengong) situated deep in the rear gardens directly beside the working rice paddies for an intimate, tranquil setting away from tour groups.
-
03
Balinese Sambal Trio. The duck is served with a trio of authentic Balinese sambals; pair the crunchy skin with the raw lemongrass-and-shallot Sambal Matah for the perfect zesty counterpoint to the rich meat.
