Nungnung Waterfall
Busy 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM Found on Google Maps 3 Oct 2026
Nungnung Waterfall is one of Bali's most powerful and thunderous natural cataracts, nestled deep within a steep rainforest gorge in the village of Nungnung, Petang, in the northern highlands of Badung Regency. Plunging roughly 50 meters down a sheer volcanic cliff face into an expansive natural plunge basin, the cascade generates an immense volume of mist and roaring white water surrounded by vertical mossy walls and hanging jungle vines. Located at an elevation of roughly 900 meters above sea level, the air is refreshingly cool and invigorating. Unlike more commercialized waterfalls, Nungnung has preserved its wild, raw natural environment, rewarding adventurous travelers willing to tackle the strenuous valley descent.
Insider tips
-
01
Conquer the 500+ Steps. Reaching the waterfall involves descending (and climbing back up) approximately 509 steep concrete steps; take frequent breaks on the covered rest pavilions and stay hydrated.
-
02
Protect Camera Gear. The raw hydraulic force of the waterfall produces a massive vortex of water vapor that will drench everything within 50 meters; bring a waterproof dry bag and lens cleaning cloths.
-
03
Mid-Morning Illumination. Arrive between 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM when morning sun rays penetrate down through the gorge, illuminating the cascading mist and frequently creating vivid rainbows across the basin.
Good to know
- Admission & Parking
- Entrance ticket is Rp 20,000 for foreign visitors (Rp 10,000 for domestic), with parking costing Rp 2,000 for motorbikes and Rp 5,000 for cars at the paved trailhead lot.
- Footwear & Swimming Caution
- Wear sturdy walking shoes with solid grip for the wet stairways; swimming right under the main waterfall plume is dangerous due to violent currents and tumbling debris, but wading in the shallower outer basin is permitted.
