Mount Agung
Busy 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM Found on Google Maps 3 Oct 2026
Mount Agung is Bali's highest, most sacred, and most majestic stratovolcano, towering to an imposing 3,142 meters above sea level in Karangasem. Revered by Balinese Hindus as the physical manifestation of Mount Meru and the spiritual navel of the island, it is the dwelling place of ancestral deities and Pura Besakih, the island's Mother Temple. Conquering Mount Agung is the ultimate mountaineering and spiritual challenge in Bali. Trekkers set out in the middle of the night to reach the crater rim at dawn, rewarded by an unforgettable sunrise above a sea of clouds that casts the colossal triangular shadow of the volcano across the island and out over the Lombok Strait.
Insider tips

Route Selection Guide. The Pasar Agung route (4-5 hours) leads to the crater rim at 2,850m and is suitable for reasonably fit hikers, while the Besakih route (6-7 hours) reaches the true summit at 3,142m and requires extreme stamina.
-
02
Dress in Thermal Layers. Summit temperatures before dawn regularly dip between 0°C and 5°C with severe wind chill; bring thermal base layers, a windproof shell jacket, a fleece, gloves, and a beanie.

Mandatory Licensed Guide. Never attempt to trek Mount Agung independently; steep scree, sheer drop-offs, and unpredictable mountain weather require hiring an experienced local Karangasem guide.
